An Ingrown Toenail is a painful condition where one of your toenails grows into the skin, either as a result of trauma or poor nail cutting. Some people have naturally wide or curved nails that are predisposed to ingrowing, but people of all ages can develop this problem.

Ingrown Toenail Infection:

An Ingrown Toenail can often become infected due to extra tissue growth, known as hypergranulation tissue, as the body tries to contain the foreign body reaction. Pus, discharge and redness results occurs as a result of infection and may need antibiotic treatment and removal of the contentious nail.

Ingrown Toenail Surgery:

Ingrown Toenail surgery is a minor procedure performed under local anaesthetic for cases that are not resolved by simple removal of spike or are a recurrent problem.

Local anaesthetic to the toe will be administered, followed by removal of a nail wedge, which effectively means the side of the affected nail. Care is taken to ensure that only a cosmetically acceptable sized wedge is removed. A chemical such as phenol is used to burn the root of the nail in the corner to permanently narrow the nail and prevent recurrence of the problem.

Ingrown Toenail surgery is highly successful with our clinic performing this procedure on a regular basis and is a permanent and effective solution to the problem.

Typically Ingrown Toenail surgery is performed as a day case procedure under local anesthetic, meaning that there is no need for an overnight stay at the hospital and there is minimal impact on daily activities postoperatively.
